The Western Pack Burro Ass-ociation (WPBA) hauled ass out of Cripple Creek after it's 2nd Annual Burro Race and Cripple Creek's 70th Annual Donkey Derby Days. The Cripple Creek-Victor mining district has long been committed to celebrating the Rocky Mountain canaries. With the help of the Two-Mile High Club and a terrific starting venue in Victor, the WPBA fielded 11 teams of human and burro and raced single track, dirt road, Aspen-ducking trails, and mining memorabilia course from Victor to Cripple Creek.
The Mayor of Victor dropped the red handkerchief to start the race that was won by Rob Pedretti and Samaritan of Canon City. This race is a perfect example of the natural association of pack burro racing and old mining towns to produce a fun, petting zoo, competitive racing event spectators love to watch.

Summit County Rotary led by Sue Brown put on a
great burro race this summer. Following the calcutta, twenty teams took
off from 2nd and Main Streets, packed with spectators, the town hall bell
ringing. The town committee was truly imaginative with their 6-mile course--
which was one of the best for the nature of the sport. It challenged
the racer and burro team with grades, single track trails loaded with tree
roots, overhanging limbs, rainfall puddles and stream crossings. Foot bridges
had to be navigated, and the real surprise this year was a new 200-yard
wooden boardwalk through a marsh that threw even some of the most seasoned
burros.
